Who can edit the Team Web Site?

Only users who have the team log-in name, password and Microsoft Frontpage can edit the team website.  The teams web site is established once a team name is established.  A log-in name and password are generated once I hear from the coach that they are ready to start maintaining the teams site.  Anyone from the team can be the webmaster for the team.  The coach has the authority to give the log-in information and password to anyone connected to the team.  As a security precaution, please separate the log-in information from the password if you are going to send this information via e-mail (send two separate e-mails).   If you are ready to  get started, please e-mail me.  You can also use any web site address you wish and the club will establish a link to your site.  www.eteamz.com offers an easy way to establish a team site.

How do I maintain the Team Site? How does it work?

You need to have Microsoft Frontpage to edit your site.  Your team's web site is a set up as a sub-web of the San Carlos United site. You are given the authority to edit the sub-site. You can go to the site, open it, change it and save it to the Web server. Once you open the site (file) it works a lot like creating a word document where you add pictures, change the font, create backgrounds, create links to other files. It's really very simple. Our site uses Frontpage extensions and you cannot FTP information to the server.  When you install frontpage, you will also have an edit button on your Microsoft Explorer browser. Simply go to your web site and click edit.

Software other than Frontpage needs to FTP the files to the FTP server directly rather than open the page and edit as Frontpage does.  FTP is not allowed to the FTP server because the Sub-webs do not have authority to the main web site.  You will need to use Frontpage.

Where do I get backgrounds and graphics?

You steal them from the web.  For example if you like the net background on the San Carlos United Home page, simply right click on it and you will be given the option of saving the background to a file or copying it.  Save it to a file on your computer, then ask Frontpage to use the file as your background.  When you save the page that uses it as a background, Frontpage will save the graphic file to the web site (save it in the images folder).  Do the same if you like the spinning soccer ball.  Any image on the Internet can be used in the same fashion.  Please do not copy inapproperiate images to you web site.

What do I use the Team Web site for?

Track Team finances so everyone can see what you are spending their money on.
Tired of making all those phone calls?  Put your schedule on the Web and keep it current.
Post maps to your next game or tournament.  Utilizing one of the map web sites (Yahoo Maps) you can create a map to the game (copy the map like you did a graphic file and paste it to a page on your site).
Team Pictures
Anything else you want to communicate to your team.

How much time does it take and is it worth it?

How much time do you spend making sure everyone is informed?  How often do you take phone calls on information that if it was posted to a web site, they could read themselves?  How much time do you spend printing team newsletters?

It is a lot easier to do it on the web.  Get your team in the habit of looking at the site for information and it will save you a lot of time.  If you feel the need to print directions or information, just print the web page and hand it out.

Bottom line, it's worth it.  I no longer do the weekly hand outs, no longer hand out maps.  If someone has a question on what time the game is two weeks from now, I ask them to check the web site because I'm getting old and my memory after working with their kids for two hours is not so good.  I have a finances page where I put the budget for the year and I have a checkbook like entries that show what was collected and what it is being spent for and how much is left.

Like anything else, the Team website grows.  You may spend a couple of hours coming up with a look that you like, but the content part just grows as time goes on.  Suggestion:  A lot of kids are more proficient in this type of thing than we are.  You may have a web wizard on your team and not even know it.  Ask your team and their parents if they are good at this sort of thing.  Then all you, the coach or manager, needs to do is keep the content current.

Good Luck.
